He learns a lot about his father, but also about himself. My favorite part of the story was watching Joe change and grow over the course of it. He has to choose between a moral choice and a poor decision that could lead to him losing everything. However, he also discovers that other possibilities are possible.

I believe this is my favourite of Eskens’ books I’ve reviewed all of them. Joe is honest to a mistake. He’s torn by his addiction mom and her past. The truth is that Joe has had to protect his autistic brother from her all his lives. Also, he wants to make right by his half-brother who he doesn’t understand. He has most likely lost his mission, may have cut his partnership to Lily and is being pressured into taking on another guardianship of a sibling who might not survive.
